Large space heating was where Jet Environmental started in the 1990s, and it’s still what we know best. Heating a big building is easy. Heating it evenly is not. Radiant heaters and unit heaters warm the spot in front of them and little else, and the warmth you’ve paid for drifts up to the roof.
We take a different approach. Heated, cooled and fresh air is carried through high-level ductwork and introduced through high-velocity nozzles, so the whole space mixes and the conditions you want are the conditions you get.
Heating: even heat, floor to roof
There are two problems with heating large spaces. Radiant and unit heaters give localised, uneven warmth. And heat naturally rises, so conditions at floor level can be very different from conditions at the ceiling.
Jet Environmental solves both by taking warmed air to where it’s needed through high-level ductwork and releasing it through high-velocity nozzles. The nozzles mix the air thoroughly, which is the standard confectionery, fine wine and pharmaceutical storage demand. They also push rising warm air back towards the ground, so the heat you generate stays where it’s useful. That is why the approach is so efficient.
Heat pumps: lower running costs, lower carbon
We adopted heat pump technology early and we can design it alongside traditional gas heating - a hybrid solution when power supply is limited or budgets are tight. This experience means robust systems that keep working in harsh conditions. Our latest designs use natural refrigerants such as propane (R290) and ammonia (R717) systems that deliver water at up to 75°C, comparable with a traditional gas boiler. In practice, you don’t always need that much - Warehouse and storage air systems typically need no more than 60°C. We design to the lowest flow temperature the job requires, because the lower the temperature, the more efficiently a heat pump runs. Some manufacturers quote up to 85°C, but a higher figure on a datasheet rarely changes what your building needs. We specify for real conditions, not headline numbers and where it makes sense, a hybrid system keeps gas available to cover the coldest peaks, so you get the savings without risking comfort or compliance.
What it can save. Heat pump systems can cut heating running costs by 20–50% compared with gas, and carbon emissions by up to 85%. Actual savings depend on your application, your energy tariffs and the carbon intensity of your electricity supply. We model the figures for your site before you commit.
Cooling: efficient, controlled and built around your operation
Cooling is increasingly common in warehouses. Product quality requirements are tightening, and modern warehouses are built more airtight than ever, so heat has nowhere to go.
Efficient cooling takes more than a big chiller. You need to understand the cooling system, the construction of the building and how your logistics operation really runs. Controls matter just as much. Used well, they make the most of free cooling when outdoor conditions allow and plan ahead, so the conditions you need are reached at the lowest running cost.
We have designed and installed small and large-scale DX and chilled water systems. On full temperature control systems, we control both cooling and reheat, so humidity is managed within the same system and you don’t need separate dehumidifiers.
Ventilation: simple, low-cost comfort, and technical solutions where it counts
Where mechanical cooling isn’t needed for compliance, ventilation is often the most cost-effective way to keep people comfortable. Combined with evaporative cooling in the right conditions, it can deliver a genuinely pleasant working environment at a fraction of the running cost.
Ventilation also does more challenging jobs. We design make-up air systems for industrial processes and odour control systems. We have years of experience in ventilation and hybrid systems that combine heating and cooling, with heat recovery and cooling retention built in, so energy you’ve already paid for isn’t thrown away with the extracted air.
Where it works
- Warehouses and distribution centresComfortable working conditions and controlled storage temperatures across the full floor area, including dock doors, pick faces and mezzanines.
- Food, confectionery and fine wine storageEven, stable conditions throughout the space, with no cold spots and no stratification.
- Pharmaceutical facilitiesUniform conditions for storage and handling areas, with the control and documentation these environments demand.
- Production and manufacturing facilitiesMake-up air, odour control and comfortable welfare and working areas, planned alongside the process.
- Retail, showrooms and service centresEven warmth, fresh air and fume control without draughts across the floor.
- Large venues, hangars and exhibition spacesHeating and ventilation for high-volume buildings where conventional systems struggle.
Proof point
Project Triathlon: four climate zones, one roof. Four independently governed zones — temperature, humidity and biosecurity pressure — across a single storage and co-packing facility.
Our approach
Understand the building — we start with how the building is constructed, how it’s used, and what your product, people and processes need from it.
Model the performance — air distribution and temperature are calculated before anything is built, so you can see how the space will behave.
Specify the right energy source — gas, heat pump, or a hybrid. We’ll recommend what suits your building and tell you if we think a different option is better.
Install with minimal disruption — our own engineers install, commission and maintain, working around a live site wherever possible.
Control, optimise and support — controls are tuned to use free cooling, plan ahead and minimise running cost. Planned maintenance and 24/7 emergency response are available through our Service & Maintenance team.
