The impossible balance
Heritage HVAC serves two masters simultaneously — and answers to the building as well.
The collections need stability. Conservation standards demand consistent temperature and relative humidity — not just day to day, but hour to hour. Expansion and contraction from cycling conditions does cumulative, irreversible damage. The environment needs to be stable enough that the materials barely know the seasons are changing outside.
The visitors need comfort. A gallery at 18 degrees with 55% relative humidity might be perfect for the paintings but uncomfortable for the people looking at them. Two hundred visitors in a room change the thermal load and humidity dramatically. The system needs to absorb that impact without compromising the conservation environment.
The building needs respect. Listed building constraints mean every piece of equipment, every duct run, every penetration needs approval and sensitivity. Visible ductwork in a Palladian gallery isn't just ugly — it's a planning refusal. Our bespoke design approach works within these constraints rather than against them.
How we solve it
Low-velocity, low-noise distribution. Gallery spaces need conditioned air delivered without draft, without noise, and without visible equipment. Our systems achieve this through careful design — not by hiding standard equipment behind screens.
Continuous environmental monitoring. Remote monitoring provides real-time temperature and humidity data with logging that satisfies conservation standards. Automated alerts if conditions move outside specification. Trend analysis that spots seasonal drift before it causes damage.
Minimal visual impact. Equipment concealed in plant rooms, service corridors, and roof voids. Distribution designed to be invisible from the public spaces. Every installation planned to preserve the character of the building while delivering modern environmental control.
Sensitive retrofit. Working within heritage buildings means understanding the structure — where you can route services, where you can't, and how to achieve effective climate control without compromising the fabric that makes the building significant in the first place.
