The brief: retrofitting M&E into a space-restricted 1970s warehouse

Land Rover is a British car manufacturer headquartered in Gaydon, Warwickshire, and part of the Jaguar Land Rover group, a subsidiary of Tata Motors of India. Its Solihull plant, on Lode Lane, Solihull, currently produces the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Land Rover Discovery and Land Rover Defender. The project centred on one of the site's refurbished warehouses, originally constructed for the 1970s Rover SD1, where JET was appointed by building services contractor Hartle's to design and install a heating and ventilation solution.

  • A large-scale production warehouse of 25,749 m² (167m × 150m, 8.4m average height) needed heating and ventilation
  • The existing 1970s roof structure left very little room to route new ductwork
  • Reliable summertime working temperatures were required across the full production floor
  • JET was appointed as specialist HVAC subcontractor to main contractor Hartle's

The solution: ten roof-mounted AHUs, ductwork threaded through the existing steelwork

Working within a space-restrictive environment, JET located ten air handling units on the roof of the premises, with ductwork routed within the existing roof steelwork to avoid disrupting the production floor below.

  • Ten AHUs mounted on the roof, keeping the full 216,290 m³ production volume clear below
  • Ductwork threaded through the roof structure's existing steelwork to fit the space-restrictive environment
  • Indirect gas-fired heating powering the system
  • Summertime temperatures held at a steady 18°C across the 25,749 m² floor

What we delivered

Consistent summertime comfort

Holds a steady 18°C across a 25,749 m² production floor throughout the summer months.

Fitted to a restrictive roof void

Ductwork threaded through the existing 1970s roof steelwork, avoiding costly structural alterations.

Ten-unit roof installation

Ten air handling units mounted externally on the roof, keeping the full production floor and volume clear.

Efficient indirect gas heating

An indirect gas-fired system delivers reliable, efficient heating across the full warehouse volume.
